El PRAC lanza su Repositorio Digital

[English below]

The Rutgers/Puerto Rico Archival Collaboration (PRAC) announces the launch of the PRAC Digital Archive and Library, a platform developed on Omeka.net that gathers and facilitates access to digitized documents and publications related to Puerto Rican history and culture, sourced from various archives and libraries PRAC has collaborated with.
The repository is the result of digitization work carried out by PRAC interns since 2022, in collaboration with participating institutions. The design, assembly, and maintenance of the archive are managed by Paula Roque Rivera, our Digitization Coordinator.
Due to the volume of material produced, the launch will take place in phases to progressively incorporate the collections digitized by the project.
This first phase brings together 3,000 items distributed across 23 collections, coming from the General Archive of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rican Library and Periodical Library of the University of Puerto Rico. Each item features basic descriptive metadata, including title, date, provenance information, rights statement, and subjects, in order to facilitate identification and searchability.

Structure

The PRAC Digital Repository is organized into two main sections: digital archives and digital libraries.
The digital archives gather unique documentary materials digitized by interns as part of their internship experiences, in collaboration with the institutions holding the original collections. The digitization of these archival materials contributes to the preservation and dissemination of Puerto Rico’s historical memory by making useful documentary resources available to the public, researchers, students, and other interested individuals. Collections featured in this launch include the Police Logbooks (Libros de Novedades) from 9 municipalities, Correspondence from the Cerro Maravilla Case belonging to the Hon. Carlos Romero Barceló collection, Press Clippings from the Economic Development Administration, and part of its Negatives collection.
For their part, the digital libraries consist of publications such as books, pamphlets, reports, magazines, academic articles, newsletters, and newspapers. In addition to the resources digitized by interns, we will share other documentary resources already available on our website and continue gathering others that are scattered. In this first phase of the repository, we focus mainly on resources that are part of digital archives, as these are unique documents that have not been previously available. However, we also highlight some publications digitized by PRAC that form part of the Virtual Library of Puerto Rico, an initiative by Javier Almeyda, director of the Puerto Rican Library and Periodical Library. Among these are the publications La Junta, Pa’ Fuera, Revista del Café, and El Agricultor Puertorriqueño, among others.
The repository also offers tools to facilitate content exploration. Users can consult search instructions and browse by collections or keywords. Likewise, the platform includes information regarding project development, the team responsible, terms of use, and copyright notices.
Through this initiative, PRAC seeks to make these materials visible, highlight their relevance to the study of Puerto Rico, and contribute to their preservation through the creation of additional backup copies.

An Ongoing Initiative

The launch of the repository represents a first step in a publication process that will continue to expand. In upcoming phases, PRAC will incorporate collections digitized at other collaborating institutions, including the Center for Advanced Studies on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, the Social Sciences Archive of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, the Luis Muñoz Marín Foundation, and the Historical Archive of Puerto Rican Protestantism.
This launch serves as a tangible demonstration of the work carried out by the PRAC team over the past three years. The digital repository highlights the value of PRAC’s collaborative model and the archival labor these institutions perform in their mission to preserve and disseminate Puerto Rican documentary heritage.
